A barrier that is commonly reported to us is scheduling sessions. Time schedules may need adjustment in schools as well as community settings, to ensure participation in all 10 sessions. The N-O-T curriculum can be adapted to a time frame that is less or more than one hour. Each session is packed with activities, and it will be up to the facilitator to determine what activities can be dropped or modified to meet the needs of the student group. Some activities, such as Journal Time, may be assigned as homework, to allow more time for interactive activities during the group meeting. Other activities are listed as optional, to allow for greater flexibility during sessions.

It is recommended that sessions be scheduled once a week, followed by booster sessions that begin no longer than two weeks after the last session. Students need time to process their learning and practice new skills. However, this time frame may not be possible in some settings.

Residential treatment centers, for example,

usually have only six weeks with their young people. Those groups meet twice a week, with booster sessions occurring during aftercare.

The following suggestions, based on previous studies of N-O-T, may help you with scheduling your N-O-T groups.

à It’s best to schedule the sessions during the school day. This helps avoid transportation difficulties for the students.

à Facilitators that are teachers sometimes find it helpful to schedule the sessions during their planning period.

à To avoid having the student miss the same class every week some facilitators rotate the meeting period.

à Some facilitators are able to use student teachers to cover their classes while they hold a session.

Other suggestions can be found on page A-13 of your facilitator manual.

Text Box: Incentives
Mini-Grants
$50 mini-grants are available to get your groups started.  The mini-grant can be used to purchase pencils, stress balls and most importantly, food!  We have heard many times, “If you feed them, they will come!”  Applying for the mini-grant is easy.

Stipends
Another positive incentive are the $250 Stipends which are available for facilitators after all evaluation materials have been returned to ALAWV.

Student Journals
Program expenses are kept to a minimum since we provide all required hand outs for students in this “journal”. Blank pages are provided for the students to write in.

Text Box: Are you a N-O-T facilitator that is not currently supporting a group because you just don’t feel comfortable with your skill level? Do you need a little boost or a refresher to update your tobacco knowledge or facilitation skills?

We have developed short, one-half day update, or refresher, workshops in both our T.A.T.U. and N-O-T youth prevention and cessation programs. In these workshops we will give you updated facts, new activities and enough information to bring you up-to-date in current tobacco control programs and strategies in West Virginia. Both T.A.T.U. and N-O-T workshops will be offered on the same day; one in the morning and one in the afternoon. That way, people trained in both programs can attend a full day workshop and others just a one-half day workshop for the program they need.

The workshops will be scheduled as soon as we know where the demand is. Please contact us if you are interested. If you are not currently supporting a group, we do ask that you make a commitment to do so once you attend the workshop. If you are actively supporting a group, we welcome you to come to receive the most recent information on our programs. Your Regional Tobacco Prevention Specialists (RTPS) are also available to assist you in getting the programs into your schools and to help you on a local basis.
