100^th Anniversary Awards & Gala

N. LeRoy Lapp, MD – Outstanding Clinician, Harry Tweel, MD – Outstanding Volunteer, Val Vallyathan, PhD – Outstanding Researcher

In honor of the 100^th anniversary of the American Lung Association, an awards dinner and gala was held on March 27 at Lakeview Resort. The 100^th Anniversary Awards & Gala was sponsored by Jackson Kelly, PLLC, Pfizer, Inc., and University Health Associates.

For the first time, the American Lung Association of West Virginia gave awards to outstanding individuals in the field of lung health.

N. LeRoy Lapp, MD, of Morgantown was honored as this year’s Outstanding Clinician. Dr. Lapp has served West Virginia for more than 30 years as a pulmonologist. He is well known in the field of lung health for his contributions with coal worker’s pneumoconiosis. Dr. Lapp also served as a professor at West Virginia University School of Medicine and has trained thousands of medical professionals about lung disease.

Harry Tweel, MD of Huntington was honored as the Outstanding Volunteer in Service to the American Lung Association of West Virginia. For the last 30 years, Dr. Tweel has tirelessly served the American Lung Association at the state and national levels. He has held every office at the state level and has served on the national board of directors. Dr. Tweel also currently serves as chair of the national advocacy committee for the American Lung Association.

Val Vallyathan, PhD of Morgantown was honored as Outstanding Researcher. Dr. Vallyathan works for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and has been conducting research for nearly three decades in the field of lung disease. His research has advanced scientific knowledge promoting the identification of lung diseases caused by asbestos, silica and coal dust exposure.

State of Respiratory Health

The American Lung Association of West Virginia and the West Virginia University School of Medicine co-sponsored the State of Respiratory Health in West Virginia, a continuing education seminar, on March 27 at Lakeview Resort. Doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists and other interested parties spent Saturday afternoon learning about lung health. Alan Ducatman, MD, Michael Smith, PhD, Daniel Christy, MPA, and Jack Parker, MD presented sessions to help participants better understand environmental and occupational causes of lung disease, as well as the burden of respiratory diseases and the state of respiratory healthcare in West Virginia. Participants also had the opportunity to visit with exhibitors from the Alpha-1 Foundation, Pfizer, Aventis Behring, GlaxoSmithKline, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Bayer Biologicals, Accredo Therapeutics, and Baxter.
